Some of my favorite mornings are mornings when I wake up, and my spontaneous husband says, “Get ready! We’re going out today.” As someone who loves to get all cute and go out on the town with my hubby, this is music to my ears.
This is exactly what happened this morning. It was 9:00 AM, I had just come back inside from walking our golden retriever, and Luke asked if I wanted to leave at 10:00 to go out today. Exciting, right?! You would think I immediately darted upstairs to start doing my makeup.
But I didn’t. Instead, I told Luke that leaving at 10:30 or 11 would be better. Why? Because I have made spending time with God and His Word a priority and habit in my day-to-day life. And so I did just that.. ate my breakfast, made some coffee, and got in the Word.
Why am I telling you this? To brag? To seem “holier than thou”? Far from it, actually. You see, it was in the time that I was reading God’s Word this morning that I realized I had taken for granted the habit I had formed in doing this.
God showed me this morning that I have been spending too much time obsessing over the things I’m not doing instead of celebrating the things I am doing. All I seem to think about these days is how I’m not doing A, B, and C but really spending time with God is A and everything else flows from that.
God showed me that what I was doing right then was the most important thing I could possibly be doing. And it’s like.. I know that.. I made it a habit for a reason. I’m not myself if I don’t first spend some time with my Creator. I am not my best if I don’t look into the mirror of God’s Word before living out my day.
Yet even though I knew this, I was still overlooking the significance in it. Sure, I want to start a YouTube channel one day, I want to write books, I want to be able to use my gifts to encourage women, but all of that starts with communing with God!
All of this to say, if you’re in the same boat as me, if you’re feeling like you aren’t “living up to your potential”, like you could be doing so much more, find rest in knowing God is pleased with you where you are at right now! If your best right now looks like spending 5 minutes praying and reading a devotional, then give yourself a pat on the back because that is incredible, friend.
With lots of love, CS.
